Katie had her hip surgery yesterday at Oakland Childrens Hospital. It took 5 hours, but her Dr said that as soon as she was under anesthesia and relaxed completely he was able to just put the hip right back in. But unfortunately it's not that easy. He shaved down the bone so that it would fit more comfortably in the socket. Then it was pinned into place for the next 6-8 weeks to heal. There was a lot more involved, but I will spare you all the gory details....
Lastly she was casted from her armpits then it goes all the way to her ankle on the right leg, and stops at the knee on her left leg. It doesn't sound that scary, but wait until you see the position that she is casted in. I didn't want to mess with her yesterday to take pictures of it, but when I go back for her to be discharged I will take some pictures to post. I had researched these Spica casts on the Internet before her surgery, but I feel so helpless. There is nothing that any of us can do to take her pain away. I think the most frustrating thing is that we can't explain to her what is happening. Yesterday was heartbreaking for all of us
She was sleeping a lot yesterday, but you can tell she is in lots of pain. So they are just trying to figure out the right combo of meds to make her comfy so she will rest. Jim and Abby are trading off nights, staying at the hospital, so she is very well taken care of!
She is supposed to get out of the hospital on Thursday, but obviously how she is feeling will determine that.
So keep thinking about her, it is going to be a very tough road for her to recover. Lots of physical therapy etc. And let's all hope that she is DONE with operations and pain for a LONG time
